The
* FIRST EVER *
POWDITCH GET-TOGETHER,
is to be held in September 2004
at Morston, Norfolk, UK,
with lots of planned events over a 3-day period,
from
Friday 17 September to Sunday 19 September 2004
with a
very Special Service of Celebration & Thanksgiving
(at which the Powditch Memorial will be unveiled and dedicated)
on
Saturday 18 September 2004
at Morston Church, Norfolk.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, after that multi-coloured start , I hope that you're as excited as I am at the prospect of the
Get-Together in September 2004. Many apologies for being late in sending the October e-Newsletter
in November (!) but due to all the work involved in getting the 2004 event 'off the ground' so that
everything will go smoothly next year, I've discovered takes a lot of organisation.

Although a lot of events etc have already been organised, there's still "several i's to be dotted and t's
to cross" at the moment, but further details, together with a programme of events plus a Registration
Form etc will be available soon, and they, together with other information, will be snail-mailed to you
with the annual Powditch Christmas card and Newsletter hopefully before the end of this Month
(November), and to what has happened during the past month.

First of all, I would like to give a big "Welcome" to both Andrew Jouvelet and Maureen Johnston
to the monthly Powditch e-Newsletters. Andrew, who lives in Australia, is very interested in his
Jouvelet history and of its connection with the Powditch family through marriage. I think that he is
the youngest visitor to date, but family history has no age 'barrier', and anything that can be done to
help him in his search I know will be much appreciated. Partly because Andrew asked me for
more information and partly because the details needed 'tidying up', the "Connections to the
Powditch Family by marriage etc" now includes details re the Jouvelet family. To go directly to that
page (other than from the home page), click on www.powditch.plus.com/Jouvelet/index.htm

Maureen Johnston, who lives in New Zealand, is a descendant of the William Powditch who went
from North Shields in the early 1820s, first of all to Australia and then to New Zealand, and where - in
both countries - he proved to be both a 'canny' businessman and an irascible figure with authority!
Maureen has kindly provided me with new information re some of William's descendants, which
has allowed me to update William's Family Tree. Unfortunately, my hopes to include more details
during the last month have suffered somewhat; principally due to sorting out the 2004 Get-Together,
but more details will be appearing soon re William's history through the Chronology pages.

Talking of New Zealand, during October, I received a most encouraging e-mail from Hugh Laracy of
the History Department of the University of Auckland, with the following comment; "Admirable. there
is considerable interest in William Powditch in Australia and NZ." - which is very good news to
my ears, as for years William Powditch has been 'out in the cold' in both of those countries. Hopefully
what is yet to be added to his Chronology will attract far more visitors to the web-site.

I have also discovered that way back in 2002, Julie Perry posted an enquiry on a Message Board
(not one of mine!), asking for information regarding Wells Powditch and his association with
Guernsey and Lighthouses. I have promised to forward information to her ASAP (Details re Wells
and his family are in my Peerless Powditch's; Volume 3, 'Norfolk Vacated' (1989) book, some
chapters of which are on the web-site.

Further to my 'plea' last month regarding a new e-mail address for Natalie Vicary I still haven't heard
anything to date re this, so if anyone can help....?

I apologise for the September e-Newsletter problems, but thank you for your 'patience' . Part of the
problem was the inclusion of the questionnaire, although strangely enough, some e-Newsletters
were received, whilst others weren't (even I was getting confused at one time!). I think that I've learnt
the lesson that I should just e-mail the e-Newsletters in 'text' format, but refer to the web-version for
you to have a look at 'on-line'. Also, if any questionnaires, etc are involved, I will provide a link to them
from the e-Newsletter.

Before I continue with the 'what's happened during October' part of the e-Newsletter, did you get a
chance to look at "The True Story of George Allen alias Powditch, who was executed on
Monday 23 April 1770" ? I'd be most interested to know what you thought of it and what your
thoughts and comments are. If you had been the Judge, what would you have done in the
circumstances?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Visitor numbers are up again and the number now stands at 3020 (an increase of 800 on the month).
As in last month's e-Newsletter, the data I receive has shown that the site has been looked at by
visitors from Countries across the world. I thought that you might be interested in one of the web-stats
pages I receive (Countries as opposed to organisations, have been highlighted in green). The chart
is for the whole month of October 2003.

Re-designed and/or 'Changed' pages on the web-site, include;-
The Master Calendar of Birthdays and Anniversaries has been moved from the central section of the home page (www.powditch.plus.com) to the left-hand column, and it now appears underneath the 3-day birthday/anniversary list.
"Latest News re the Powditch Family" has been moved into a new, more-prominent position within the central section of the home page
The "Introduction | Links | About Me | Contact me | Copyright" links, which had been at the top of the home page, have now been moved to just below the Latest News/e-Newsletter boxes, and are now highlighted in green.

Besides the above, you may have noticed that the layouts of some web-pages have changed.
Hopefully you've found them easier to use?

NEW items added during September, were;-
direct links to the monthly e-Newsletters. The various months now appear in boxes underneath the "Latest News re the Powditch Family" title.
(As mentioned above), - "Connections to the Powditch Family by marriage etc" now includes details re the Jouvelet family who married into the Powditch's. To go directly to that page (other than from the home page), click on www.powditch.plus.com/Jouvelet/index.htm

Items due to be added as soon as I've finished them, include;-
more Village details etc for the Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk pages.

As mentioned in last month's e-Newsletter, I need to know whether you are getting any Code 404
(Page Not Found) messages. I do really need to know about the messages so that they can be
corrected, especially as so far this month, 321 URL's (i.e.80 pages) have not been found by visitors,
and just one page (or section of a page) not found could lead to a visitor not returning.

Besides the usual topics, last month's e-newsletter included an on-line Questionnaire regarding
the inclusion (or not) of (your) e-mail address(es) on the Powditch web-site. The reason for the
questionnaire contact e-mail 'addresses' so that individuals could get in touch with one another. I
therefore asked for your requirements/instructions.
The Question was;
Are you in favour of having your e-mail address, as per the examples shown above,
included on a 'special page' on the Powditch web-site?
YES or NO
Also, whichever reply you gave, I asked for your reason(s)

To date, I have received only 3 replies from my total of 58 e-mail contacts, and of those who have replied to date, their answers are as follows;
Yes (I am in favour) = 2     No (I am not in favour) = 1

Besides the above, the Comments received, stated the following (names not shown);
YES. I would have no objection to my e-mail address being published, all for being able to contact others more easily.
YES. Willing to know of my family
NO. I believe viruses can lock on to email addresses scanned off the internet and therefore as security on computers is quite an issue at the moment I would not be in favour of it.

As I have only received 3 replies to date I can't really take the majority's viewpoint on the subject. I
would still welcome your views on the "to include or not to include" question however, and ask you to
send an e-mail to webmaster@powditch.plus.com  with your views and comments -
(or you can click on enewsletter_september_2003 and answer the on-line questionnaire on that page)

Thanks, and all the best for now,
John
P.S. Although the e-Newsletter is a totally free update regarding 'happenings/changes' to the web-site,
if there should be any particular reason you do not wish to continue receiving a copy of it, perhaps you
could e-mail me and let me know?  I'd also be most grateful for any details you may know about re
births, marriages, deaths, illnesses, change of addresses, achievements, discovery of
family papers/documents on or about the Powditch family etc, or anything else. Also, if you know of
any family members who are now 'on-line' and who have an e-mail address, I'd be grateful for their
details.

Please remember
Items updated on the web-site are highlighted with ! !
whilst any New items are highlighted by the letters, NEW .
but these 'messages' only appear on the Home page of the web-site, at
