Powditch Newsletter - May 2003
No. 1
You are here:  home  >  News  >  eNewsletter for May 2003
Just to prove that I've not been sitting back and taking things easy (chance would be a fine thing!), this is just to let you know that the Powditch web-site at www.powditch.plus.com has been added to,
amended and has had some 'old' pages redesigned; all of which has been done to help you load and
view pages easier and (hopefully) quicker.

A little while after I began the web-site, I added a feature in the left hand column of the index/Home page, for Birthdays and Anniversaries. As you may have noticed, the info under that heading provides details of events for 'yesterday/today/tomorrow' (allowing for the USA, UK and Australia to view the birthdays and anniversaries on the day they occur in their Countries).

In order to do this - which also then allows me to highlight individuals' special events - I have to update
the web-site on a daily basis. Although I don't mind updating the Birthdays and Anniversaries column,
I do need to know whether you find that particular information to be of any use to you, especially as -
I'm sure you already know - I provide a 'clickable' section entitled "Calendar of Birthdays and
Anniversaries for 2003" within the body of the main index/Home page of the site. I will be leaving the
Calendar section there permanently, but if you don't find the left-hand column to be of any use, I'd be glad
to know, as I might be able to use that column for something else.

Recently re-designed pages are those for;-
Peerless Powditch's,
The Family tree of William Powditch of Australia and New Zealand, and
The Chronology of William Powditch of Australia and New Zealand,

whilst 3 NEW pages (added within the last couple of days) are for;-
Powditches who fought in World War I,
Powditches who fought in World War II
Powditches who fought in other Wars.

- which include details suggested to me by Robert Nilson (of Sydney, NSW). Incidentally, if you should
know of any Powditch who has been involved in any War (World or otherwise) and who hasn't already
been included on the 3 pages mentioned, I'd be grateful for (any) information about them.

Other 'changes' to the site include
The actual list of subjects (on the index, or Home, page) has now been put into alphabetical order (hope that it doesn't cause too much confusion!),
"Coming Soon" items which previously had been listed (that is, apart from mention of John Kitteridge Powditch of the UK and Chile), have now been removed, as I felt that as it was going to be a long while before I could introduce the topics mentioned. I also felt that you might get fed up with seeing the "Coming Soon" list every time you looked at the web-site!
Items updated now have ! ! in front of each relevant entry,
New items added to the site have NEW typed in front of each new entry.
The date and time of each update I make to the site is provided
There is a 'rolling' Day, Date and Time section at the top of the right hand column.

Incidentally, although there is a web-counter facility on the web-page, it is currently showing about 112 visitors fewer than have actually visited www.powditch.plus.com The reasons for this are two-fold. The
first reason being that I didn't include the counter until some time after going live with the web-site, whilst
the second reason is that the Counter provided by Web-Counters works to a different method for
collating the information, to that of my Web-site Host. To put it a different way, as at today (20 May 03),
the web-counter on the site said that there had been 502 visitors, whereas the Host's collated
information shows there to have been 614 visitors (who, to date, have made 14122 hits; i.e. an average
of 23 pages looked at per visitor!). Thank you therefore for looking, and be assured that I will be greatly
adding to the site on a daily basis.

A little while ago I included a 'Guest Book' facility on the web-site, but have been a little disappointed
that to date I have only had 3 entries (and one of those was my own to test it out!!!). I would be grateful
for any of your comments (not rude ones, for the software used scans any rude words and won't include
any 'Guest' entries for such senders) to be added to the Guest Book. I will however be monitoring that
'facility' over the next 8 weeks, and if it doesn't warrant being continued after that date, I will delete the
"Please Sign my Guest Book" section, and just physically enter any e-mailed info sent to me into the
"Latest News" section. Please can you let me know what you think about a "Guest Book" on the site,
or about Guest Books in general (do you 'sign' them on other sites you visit? etc) I would welcome any
comments to me re this subject.

Well, I think that that is all for now. Hope that the NEWSLETTER (the first of what I hope will be a Monthly
update of YOUR web-site) will be of interest, and that you will reply with suggestions, criticisms,
possibilities, praise (?!), and anything else you want to communicate to me.

Because I realise that not everyone has e-mail etc facilities, if you do know of any Powditch or
Powditch-descendant who isn't 'on-line', I would be most grateful for you to let them know re the contents
of this e-mail (perhaps you could print off a copy/copies and send, or hand, a copy to them?). Similarly,
if you know of any Powditch e-mails that I may not have, I'd be grateful to know of them, so that I can
also keep them updated with details of the Powditch web-site.

Finally(!), if you have any suggestions for new pages to be added to the web-site, please don't be afraid
to ask. Whatever I can add I will, and I will certainly acknowledge your suggestion(s) and input it/them
into any new page(s) added. Pictures/Photos are fairly easy to scan in, but I've just discovered that
video images are more impractible due to their size (approx 14 seconds of video = approx 8MB of
memory and takes 45 minutes to transfer from my computer to the web-site! I did try transferring a
36 second/18MB video file, but that was going to take over 2 hours to transfer, so I decided to forget
videos for the moment!). Original documents (including Wills, Discharge papers, Certificates [of all
types] etc can be included, and I can also transcribe the information onto the web-page, so don't be
shy........!

Thanks for being a Powditch or Powditch-descendant, or for just being interested in Powditch history.

All the best for now,
John
