No. 3

Welcome to the (belated!) July 2003 Newsletter re the www.powditch.plus.com web-site, and to
what has happened during the past month.

First of all a big WELCOME to;-
Natalie Vicary of London, who is the daughter of the late Maureen Vicary (nee Powditch), and who
contacted me recently trying to find members of her (Cardiff, South Wales) Powditch family. She
is now in contact with her uncles and cousins and I hope that they will all be able to meet up again
soon

Having just mentioned the subject of 'meeting up', please will you note the following IMPORTANT NEWS!

** POWDITCH GET-TOGETHER IN 2004 **
As you may (or may not?) already know, the original families of Powditch moved across the face of
Norfolk during the late 1400s/early 1500s period, from the Fenland villages of Emneth, Outwell, Upwell,
etc to Bishop's (later, King's) Lynn (late 1400s) , and Wiveton (early 1500s), before ending up in the
village of Morston sometime before 1538.

Over the next 232 years, members of the Powditch family (spelled variously as Apowdi(t)che;
Powdich(e); Poudich; Powditch, etc) lived, farmed and worked in and around Morston village, whilst
the majority of them worshipped at the Parish Church of "All Saints", Morston, where in turn they
were baptised, married and buried.

The "Friends of Morston Church" have proposed to me that in view of the Powditch family of yesteryear
having given such commitment to their Church (and Village), they would like to hold a special
Thanksgiving Service for them during the late Summer/early Autumn of next year (2004).

The purpose of the special 'Thanksgiving Service' and the 'Get-together', is two-fold;
one part being for the "Friends of Morston Church" to present a framed vellum calligraphic 'Memorial' to the Powditch family of Morston (together with 2 framed family trees showing the spread of the family from the 1500s til now) - all of which will be securely fixed on the internal wall of the Church, probably close to the famous Robart Powdich graveslab of 1647,
and secondly, to raise money for the upkeep of the Church (especially for repairing the roof, which is leaking, and which, in turn is in danger of affecting the Powditch memorials, the15th century painted wooden screen, and other internal treasures).

Although I hope that I have 'whetted your appetite' re the above, I would just like to say that over the
next couple of weeks, I hope to be able to provide you with more details re the event, at which time,
I will also be sending  out details (by snail-mail) to all those who don't have access to a Computer.

Should you wish to have a peek at what will be added soon to the Powditch web-site (re Morston), then
may I  suggest that you click on to www.powditch.plus.com/Morston/index.htm
Certainly if you go to the main Powditch web-site you won't find the 13 pages re Morston there at
the moment (the pages are still at a 'trial stage'), but it will certainly provide you with an insight into
Morston and our Powditch forbears' time there during the 1500s-1700s period (more will be
revealed when the extracts from the Morston Parish Registers appear on the site, soon, as well)

Since the June Newsletter was issued;-
On 14 July 2003, the 1000th Visitor accessed the powditch web-site! As at today (1 August) we're
rapidly heading for the 1100 mark (actually = 1096). Thanks to everyone for looking at the site, and I
hope that you keep enjoying what you find there.

Re-designed pages on the web-site, include;-
Web-Stats. The layout has been totally changed in order to provide a Monthly (rather than daily) update of the site's usage. Having examined the previous details, I realised that some of the bar-charts might not have meant anything to viewers, so I have introduced a new set of charts which hopefuly will provide much more meaningful information as to the site's usage. If you want to have a look now, please click on www.powditch.plus.com/Webstats/index.htm - although the details can normally be accessed from the link at the bottom of the www.powditch.plus.com page

NEW items added during July, were;-
"Search this Site" (powered by 'FreeFind'); this is a 'box' appearing on the main page
(www.powditch.plus.com) which once a word is (or words are) entered into it, and the 'Find!'
button is clicked on, the site will be searched for you, and then you will be presented with all of the
relevant pages.  Have a try, and let me know what you think about the facility; certainly beats
having to search through the hundreds of pages and names!

Powditch Family Genealogy Forum
(reached via either www.powditch.plus.com/lists_and_digests.htm or directly from
http://genforum.genealogy.com/powditch/ either way you access the details, I hope that you will
find the Forum of use, and also that you will use it.

Other 'changes' to the site include;-
Powditch ROOTS . When I sent out the Update (just after June's Newsletter went out), I said about
having  introduced a Powditch Family Mailing List. Well I must apologise if you clicked on the
section which said about posting a message to the Powditch-L list, as you would just have been
asked to 'subscribe' to the list (which I hope that you will do, anyway). Unfortunately I had set up the
link incorrectly, however, I have now re-jigged the page, and as well as being able to 'subscribe' to
the Mailing List, you will now be able to post queries and answers to it.

Further to last Month's 2 requests, I do hope that you'll 'forgive' me, but I'm going to repeat
them (just in case);

Because I have introduced a "Picture Gallery of Past and Present Powditch's" page onto
the web-site (take a look, I think that you'll like what's there already) I'm hoping that you
might consider letting me add a photograph (or photographs) of yourself/your family,
plus any photos/pictures of your forbears etc. Any photos etc sent to me will be scanned
and immediately returned to you (at my  cost). Also, although the pages at present
appear to only be for Past Powditchs and for Wales, I have already set up pages
(ready to include the photos etc) for the Countries of Australia, Canada, Chile, New
Zealand, UK and USA, so anything you can send will be much appreciated.

Besides the above, if you also have any Original documents (including Wills, Discharge papers,
Certificates [of all types] etc which you would like to be included on the web-site, please can you
let me know, and I'd be more than pleased to scan (and transcribe) the details onto 1 (or more)
pages. I will also return all originals sent to me.

Thanks once again for being a Powditch or Powditch-descendant, or for just being interested in
Powditch history.

All the best for now,
John
P.S. Although the Newsletter is a totally free update regarding 'happenings/changes' to the web-site,
if there should be any particular reason you do not wish to continue receiving a copy of it, perhaps you
could e-mail me and let me know? In later issues I am hoping to just provide basic details
(additions, deletions, amendments, welcomes, etc), but I am open to any suggestions, so please keep
them coming........!

Items updated on the web-site are highlighted with ! ! whilst any New items are highlighted by the
letters, NEW .
