Generation No. 1

Up to the present day, very little has been discovered about GEORGE JONES although it is
possible that  he was born sometime between 1785/6, and that he may have died in the
1851 to 1861 period.

What is known however, is that he married twice.  In August 1807 he married  SARAH
BENTLEY (she died March 1835) whilst less than 5 months after her death, he married
again, and this time, to RACHEL EVANS.

GEORGE’s first wife, SARAH had been the second daughter ( and just one of the
10 children) of GEORGE BENTLEY and REBECCA MASSEY.  The family had (as far as
has been researched to date) originated from Staffordshire, and had worked within the
Pottery industry in that County.

GEORGE BENTLEY is believed to have been born between 1760 and 1765, and on
7 April 1787 at  ?‘Norton-le-M’ in Staffordshire, he married his wife REBECCA MASSEY
(who had been born about May 1764 in ?Woolstanton, Staffordshire).

In all, their children were;-

i
CHARLOTTE BENTLEY, who was  born about
February 1788, in Woolstanton, Staffordshire, and
baptised there on 17 February 1788.  CHARLOTTE died in May 1807 at  Swansea, and
on  3 May 1807, she was buried at  St. John's-
juxta-Swansea (now St. Matthew's) Church, High
Street, Swansea
ii
SARAH BENTLEY, was born between 1789
and 1790, in Staffordshire, and she died in
March 1835, at Swansea, South Wales (see
main body of this text for details re her
marriage to GEORGE JONES).
iii
MARTHA BENTLEY, was born on  23 April 1792,
although it is not known to date whether her birth
was in Swansea or in Staffordshire.  What is
known, is that she was baptised on 8 October
1794, St. Mary's Church, Swansea, and that just
under 10 years later,  in  August 1814, she died
at Swansea.  MARTHA was buried on 21 August
1814, at St. John's-juxta-Swansea (now St.
Matthew's) Church, High Street, Swansea.
 iv
REBECCA BENTLEY,  was born on 2 May 1794,
and  baptised on 8 October 1794, St. Mary's
Church, Swansea.  Twenty-one years later on
11 November 1815, REBECCA married JOHN
GARDNER at St. Mary's Church, Swansea.  To
date, details of his date and place of birth have
not been traced, and also not known, to date,  are
REBECCA and JOHN’s dates and places of
death and burial).
v
GEORGE BENTLEY, was born on  22 March 1797,
and baptised on  4 June 1797, St. Mary's Church,
Swansea, Whilst it is not known for certain,
GEORGE may have been a twin of JOHN
BENTLEY (q.v.) who is believed to have been
born 1797/8.  To date, GEORGE’s date and place
of death has not been found.
vi
JOHN BENTLEY, was born between 1797 and
1798, but his  baptism (if he ever had one) has
not to date been traced.  As written above, he
may have been a twin of GEORGE BENTLEY (q.v.)
who was born on  22 March 1797.   JOHN died in
June 1817, at Swansea, and he was buried at
St. John's-juxta-Swansea (now St. Matthew's
Church), High Street, Swansea, on 4 June 1817,
aged 20 years old.
vii
JEMIMA BENTLEY, was  born on 15 April 1799,
and she was baptised on 16 April 1799, at
St. Mary's Church, Swansea.  JEMIMA was the
twin of WILLIAM BENTLEY (q.v.).  She died in
August 1799, at Swansea, and she was buried at
St. John's-juxta-Swansea (now St. Matthew's
Church), High Street, Swansea, on 16 August 1799
viii
WILLIAM BENTLEY, was born on  15 April 1799,
but his  baptism (if he ever had one) has not to
date been traced.  WILLIAM was the twin of
JEMIMA BENTLEY (q.v.).  He died in May 1826,
at  Swansea, South Wales, although the place of
his burial has not yet been found.
ix
ELIZABETH BENTLEY, was born between 1801
and 1806.  Although it is known that she was
married to WILLIAM EVANS, the date and place
of their marriage has not, to date, been traced.
WILLIAM’s own  date of birth is believed to have
been between 1801 and 1806, although to date,
details of the place of his birth have not been
traced, and also not known, to date,  are
ELIZABETH and WILLIAM’s dates and places of
death and burial).
x
JOB BENTLEY, was born in 1802, and he died on
11 January 1840, in Swansea, South Wales (no
further details are known regarding JOB).

Around 1790/1, the BENTLEY family had moved from the established potteries of Staffordshire
to the fledgling ones of Swansea, for in 1791,  Pottery Records reveal that GEORGE
BENTLEY was a  “ 'modeller' at the Cambrian Pottery, Swansea”.   By 1794 GEORGE
and REBECCA  were having their Swansea-born children, baptised at the Parish Church
of St. Mary’s,  in the centre of Swansea town.

Five years after the birth of their tenth, and last, child, JOB (q.v.),  GEORGE and REBECCA
BENTLEY’s daughter, SARAH, married  GEORGE JONES  - their marriage taking place on
10 August 1807 in the Parish Church of St. Mary's, Swansea.

GEORGE and SARAH were to have 8 children.  They were;-

i
ROBERT JONES (1) , who was born on 19 March 1810, and baptised
on 12 May 1811, at St. Mary's Church, Swansea.  ROBERT died in
January 1815, at Swansea, and he was buried on 15 January 1815,
at St. John's-juxta-Swansea (now St. Matthew's) Church, High Street,
Swansea
ii
?JAMES JONES (1), was born in  February 1813, Swansea, South
Wales. Some 7 months later, ?JAMES died, and he was buried, on
23 February 1813, at St. John's-juxta-Swansea (now St. Matthew's)
Church, High Street, Swansea
iii
CHARLOTTE JONES, was born on 5 June 1814, and was baptised
on 26 June 1814, at St. Mary's Church, Swansea.  She died just over
4 years later, in September 1819, and was buried at  St. John's-juxta-
Swansea (now St. Matthew's) Church, High Street, Swansea on
12 September 1819.
iv
ROBERT JONES (2), was born on. 18 October 1816.
On 21 October 1857, he died; his address at the time being:
Graig Gardens, Swansea.  (For further details re ROBERT
JONES' life etc, see below).
v
GEORGE JONES (1), was born on 29 July 1820, and he was
baptised on 20 August 1820, at St. Mary's Church, Swansea.
GEORGE died in November 1822, and he was buried on
21 November 1822, in, it is believed, ?St. Mary's Church, Swansea
vi
GEORGE JONES (2), was born on 18 February 1826, and he was
baptised on 12 March 1826, at the Goat Street Wesleyan Chapel, in
Swansea.  According to the 1841 Census for Swansea, he was (at
that time) living with GEORGE and RACHEL JONES, and his
occupation was shown to be that of a  'Potter'.   To date, the place
and date of his death and burial has not been traced.
vii
REBECCA JONES, was born about 1828.  On the  1841 Census for
Swansea, she was (at that time) living with GEORGE and RACHEL
JONES.   To date, the place and date of her death and burial has not
been traced.
viii
JAMES JONES (2), was born on 9 August 1833, and it is believed
that he was baptised at  ?St. Mary's Church, Swansea.   To date, the
place and date of his death and burial has not been traced.

In March 1835, SARAH JONES (nee BENTLEY) - GEORGE’s wife  - died.  Although her exact
age has not yet been determined, it is believed that she was approximately 45 years old.
SARAH was buried on 15 March 1835, at St. John's-juxta-Swansea (now St. Matthew's
Church), High Street, Swansea, thus joining within the churchyard, many of her children,
as well as her brothers and sisters.

GEORGE JONES appears not to have wasted any time after the death of SARAH, to remarry,
for on 20 July 1835, he married RACHEL EVANS at  Llangyfelach, near Swansea,.  RACHEL
had been born about 1793 (based on her age details on the 1841 Census for Swansea).  As far
as has been ascertained to date, GEORGE JONES and RACHEL (nee EVANS) do not appear
to have had any children after their marriage.  Also, although the date of  GEORGE’s death has
been narrowed down to the 1851 to 1861 period, to date, details of RACHEL’s death and place
of burial have not been traced.

Between  1841 and 1847, GEORGE JONES was referred to as being a  “ 'Potter', at
Cambrian” (‘Cambrian’ being one of the Pottery works in Swansea ), and in 1851, according
to the Census for Swansea, he was living in Bethesda Street, Swansea.  Still alive in 1851,
GEORGE JONES is believed to have died some time between that year and the Census of
1861, but as to when and where hasn’t currently been traced.  I seem to have a vague idea
that someone once upon a time had told me that GEORGE had died in Bristol, but I do not
have anything to prove that possibility.  I would say however, that within the 1851 to 1861
period, the Civil Registration for England and Wales, has a very substantial number of
persons named GEORGE JONES whose deaths were registered.  Regrettably, until
further details re GEORGE, or more ‘concrete’ information is uncovered, there will remain
a ‘blank’ for the date and place, of his death and burial.

Generation No. 2

First surviving son of GEORGE JONES was  ROBERT, who was born on 18 October 1816,
and baptised on 17 December 1816, at St. Mary's Church, Swansea.  During the period
1841 to 1847 he lived at Queen Street, Swansea, whilst at the time of the 1851 Census for
Swansea, his occupation was stated to have been that of a “ 'Potter' and 'Fireman' at
Cambrian Pottery, Swansea”.  ROBERT JONES, aged just 41 years old,  died on
21 October 1857 in Graig Gardens, Swansea, from "Aneurism of Thoracic Aorta.
Uncertain Dilation of Heart" (Certified).  According to details provided by ANN JONES
(ROBERT's widow) on his Death certificate, ROBERT JONES had been a “Potter
(Journeyman)”.

ROBERT JONES married (1) CAROLINE DAVIES, on 20 November 1836 in St. Mary's
Church, Swansea.

CAROLINE was the daughter of JOHN DAVIES and MARGARET (..?...), and she had been
born on 16 August 1816, and baptised on  8 September of the same year, at Goat Street
Wesleyan Chapel, Swansea.  CAROLINE died on 30 March 1846 in Queen Street,
Swansea, aged just 29 years old, from "Emplaysema Myplytrophy of the Heart (Certified)".
(Note: Richard W. Williams has a copy of her death certificate)

ROBERT and CAROLINE only had the one child;-

i
GEORGE JONES, who was born on 18 February 1846, at
Queen Street, Swansea, of which,  Richard W. Williams
has a copy of his birth certificate,   On the 1861 Census for
Swansea, GEORGE was stated to have been a “Copper-
plate printer' (at ?Cambrian Pottery)”.  To date, the date
and place of his death has not been traced.

ROBERT next married (2) ANN MIDDLETON on 25 April 1847 in Lady Countess Huntingdon's
Chapel, Swansea, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Connexion.  According to the
local Newspaper, "The Cambrian", Swansea, for 7 May 1847, the Marriages Column stated
"On the 25th  ult. by the Rev. T. Dodd at Lady Huntingdon's Chapel.  Mr Robert Jones to Miss
Ann Middleton, both of Swansea" (details provided by Richard W. Williams in 1987)

ANN MIDDLETON was the daughter of WILLIAM MIDDLETON and MARY BOND.  She had
been born about the year 1820 in Bristol, and she was baptised on 23 April 1820, at
St. James', Bristol .  By  25 April 1847, she was shown to be living at Oxford Street,
Swansea.  Interestingly, the 1861 Census for Swansea, states that her occupation (and
address) was that of  “keeping a Grocer's shop at The Graig, adjacent to the quarries,
Swansea”, whilst 10 years later, the 1871 Census, shows her to be living at  2 Graig Gardens,
Swansea.  Twenty-two years later,  ANN JONES (nee MIDDLETON) died, aged  72 years
old.  Her death, on 21 September 1893 in 147 St. Helen's Avenue, Swansea, South Wales,
was due to “'Heart Disease Exhaustion”  (Certified by Alex'r Deas Davidson, MD), the details
of which, are provided on ANN’s Death Certificate, the informant who was present at the
death, being ELIZA JONES (nee QUICK), ANN’s daughter-in-law.
The children of ROBERT JONES and ANN MIDDLETON were:

 i
ROBERT MIDDLETON JONES, who was born between  July and
September 1848, in Swansea, South Wales.  Although he married
FANNY LILLEY (who was born c1852/3 at  Warington/Werrington,
Northants), the date and place of their marriage hasn't so far, been traced.
ROBERT, who had  "worked at (the) Pottery as a boy", and who, according
to the 1881 Census for Swansea, lived at 29 Nicholl Street, Swansea,
died on 15 February 1895, at 37 George Street, Swansea.  ROBERT's
wife, FANNY, who was referred to on different  occasions as both a
'Missionary' as well as her being the Superintendent of Swansea Y.M.C.A.,
died in 1939.

ROBERT MIDDLETON JONES made a Will, the contents of which, are as
follows;-:

THOMAS JAMES JONES, according to the 1881 Census for Swansea,
was a "House-Painter", whilst the 1891 Census for Swansea, shows him
to be living at 122 Western Road, Swansea.

THOMAS died on 11 April 1908, at 21 George Street, Swansea, in very
tragic circumstances.  His death, and the inquest finding re it, makes for
'interesting' reading.  The details were reported in the "?South Wales
Evening Post".

"Swansea Painter's Suicide.
Self-Inflicted Wound That Proved Fatal.
Wife's Sad Story of Deceased's Ill-Health.

An inquest was held at Swansea hospital on Monday, on the body
of Thomas Jones (50), painter and decorator, 21, George Street,
who died on Saturday from a self-inflicted wound in the throat.

Sarah Jones, widow, said her husband had been in failing health
for 12 months, and six weeks ago he had a stroke. Witness
thought it greatly affected his mind, in fact deceased told her as
much, and hinted that she would have to put him away. Last
Tuesday he wandered from Swansea, and found himself in
London, and Telegraphed home to say he was coming back.

Coroner: You are confident he did not know what he was about?
- he could not have done.

Witness said deceased could not sleep last week, and on Friday
she woke up at 5:40am to give the men the keys of the next door
house. She left him in bed, and about a quarter past nine went
upstairs and before she got there she heard him groaning and
shivering, and found him in bed covered with blood. She at first
thought it was haemorrhage, but then saw a razor on the floor. The
razor was kept in another room, and belonged to  their son-in-
law, and deceased must have got out of bed to get it. Witness
went for a doctor.

Dr. Dury said deceased had a wound in the throat, and died on
Saturday. No large artery was cut; there were also a couple of
cuts on the wrists as well. Death was due to exhaustion and
shock, following the cutting of the windpipe.

Coroner said it was an extremely sad case. It was only evident
that the poor fellows mind had given way, and that he could not
have been held responsible for his action. Deceased was a
respectable man and [...] respectable family, but his mind must
have got into such a state that he did not know what he was
doing. The coroner suggested that the jury should retain a verdict
that deceased died through shock and exhaustion, following on a
self-inflicted wound to the windpipe, whilst irresponsible for his
actions.

Jury returned a verdict accordingly and the Coroner sympathised
with Mrs Jones in her affliction"

Well, what do you think?  Did THOMAS do it, or did someone in the family
'put him out of his misery'?

Generation No. 3

WILLIAM HENRY JONES was the second son of ROBERT and ANN JONES, and he was born
on 20 May 1851 in Bethesda Terrace, Swansea.

Following in his family’s footsteps, he “worked at (the) Pottery as a boy”, although at some
indeterminate time in his life, he became involved in the business of Painting and Decorating.

WILLIAM HENRY JONES married twice.    He married (1) ELIZA QUICK (who was then living at
