Powditch was the Master / Captain / Commander of
the Hull-built (1820?) ship 'Royal George'.
In 1822 when the ship was surveyed at London and New
South Wales (by/for Lloyds), it was declared to have been
sC (i.e. sheathed with Copper); of 500 tons; 19 (i.e. under
12 foot draught of water when loaded) The vessel was
stated to be in 'A' (First Class) '1' (First Quality) condition.
N.B. In the Shipowners Register, Powditch has been
written as Bowditch

(Edward Lord: 1781-1859) "During 1822 he (Edward
Lord) was accused of trying to bribe the head of the
commissariat, but Governor Brisbane was prevented
from investigating the matter by Lord's departure in
the Royal George which he had chartered to carry
wool to England. The ship was almost wrecked at
Cape Town, which caused Lord 'serious Losses'. At
this time he claimed assets in Van Diemen's Land of
£200,000, and debts owing to him of £70,000..............."

"...In the eve, Capt. Mackey came up and some of the
crew of the brig Actaeon which is lost off the South
Cape. Capt. M. came from Isle of France and informd
us of the loss of the Royal George and many other
ships which suffered in a gale off Table Bay. Capt.
Powditch saild from hence 1st May, a full ship with
colonial produce and my fried [sic] E. Lord Esqr. and
two children in her".
