You are here: home  >  News  >  Powditch eNewsletter - June 2005 Issue No. 23

Topics this issue include;
1. eNewsletter       2. Welcome       3. Website update
6. 'Lost' family member       7. 'Stop Press'       8. .....and finally!
 1. eNewsletter
This month's issue is much shorter than May's mostly due to my having been sorting out all of the
Powditch folders etc (Ang can at last use some of the extra worktop space in the kitchen!)

Although I still have a lot of folders to complete, at least I'm now in a much better position for
accessing information required in order for me to research some new 'avenues' re Powditch
ancestry, especially relating to the Jordeson, Hubbard family connections, etc.
 2. Welcome
I'd like to welcome to this edition of the eNewsletters, the following who have contacted me since the
last issue;-

a.  Cilla Alexander, from Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire, whose great great great grandfather
(William Hubbard) married Grace Powditch, in 1806. Cilla has been researching the Hubbard
side of her family, and is very interested in discovering more about Grace's ancestry.

b.   Isobel Reyenga and Beth Sherlock, from Melbourne, Australia, who are both descended
from Josephine Sherlock who married Adolphus Victor Willcox Powditch. Although they have
been able to research much about both Josephine and Adolphus, they are finding that the
descendants of both Henry Cooke Sherlock and Emily Bairds, are far more elusive! If you do
know anything about either of those names/families, if you'd email me, I'll let Isobel and Beth
know.

c.   Maria Eugenia Arrieta Larrain, from Madrid, Spain, who is searching for her Mackay
ancestors in Chile. Although at one time during our emails to each other, there was a possibility
of her Mackay ancestor having married a Powditch in Chile - Maria having originally advised me
that she was descended from the Dr John Mackay's marriage to Caroline Powditch - she later
advised me that "The only real information that I have is that the first Mackay to arrive in Chile
about 1840, met the daughter of the chief mining engineer at Lota Schwager's Company,
Mr. Smith, whom he married". As I don't have any information to connect a Mackay to a Smith, I
am hoping that one of my Chilean Powditch contacts might know something about the former.
Any information will be forwarded to Maria Eugenia.
 3. Website update
Since my last eNewsletter (No.22), changes to the website, have included;-

The Latest News section (www.powditch.plus.com/News/latest_news.htm ) has been updated, as have the
The homepage (www.powditch.plus.com/ ) has had its background colour changed, and also, the photograph at the top of the page has been replaced by a lovely one taken of the roof and windows Norwich Cathedral, by Pat and Peter Powditch of Adelaide.

Coming soon will be the return of the various Powditch family trees, although they will be gradually
returned to the website as the format has been completely changed (hopefully for the better!) -
more details about them will hopefully be in the next eNewsletter.
 4. Can you help? / Changed email addresses.

Further to my requests in the last eNewsletter for information re several Powditch family members
who had changed their email addresses, I have only heard about that for Tamsin Powditch (of
Bristol) - thanks very much, but if you want to re refer to the original question, you can access the
previous eNewsletter (No 22) and its contents, from
 5. 'Statistics'.

Over the next few issues of this eNewsletter, I'll be including various statistics which are provided to
me by both my ISP as well as from other links I use, to highlight which pages of the www.powditch.plus.com/ website are looked at, what 'keywords' are used by individuals in order
to find items of interest, and also what words are entered into the 'Search' facility on the site's
homepage.

For this month, I thought that you might like to see some of the "Queries" which have been entered
into the 'Search' box on the Powditch homepage since the beginning of 2005, and would point out
that each search is shown below in the format of Day, Month, Date, Time of Query, together with the
Query itself.

Although the information does help me to see what 'visitors' are looking for, regrettably I am not
provided with details of who is reading the pages, although in the main, I do usually receive emails
from most visitors, either requesting to be added to the eNewsletter list, or advising me of family
connections etc.

Well, I hope that you found the above to be of interest, especially if you had entered any of the
queries! At least you can see what many visitors are looking for.

In the next eNewsletter I will include the 'top keywords' that are used on search engines (such as
Google, AlltheWeb, Yahoo, etc) by individuals in order to find topics or people on the site
(incidentally, does anyone know what or who "Thysanotus" is? (see Jan 19 2005 above), whilst in
future eNewsletters, I'll include other details I get from my ISP (to see just the figures re 'visitors',
'hits', number of pages viewed, and much more besides, have a look at www.powditch.plus.com/Webstats/index.htm )
 6. 'Lost' family member.

In or about the year 1959, Geoffrey Peter Powditch - who had been born in Wells-next-the-Sea,
Norfolk - emigrated to Australia, and in 1965, he was working in the area of Perth, Western Australia.

Many years ago, his step-brother, David John Powditch (who now lives in Spain) was in Australia,
and met up with Geoffrey, when they were both at a test site, but since then, neither David nor his
brother Philip (who lives in the UK) have heard anything more from or about him.

Geoffrey Peter Powditch would now be in his 70th year (his special birthday is on Christmas day),
but as to where he is living, or whether he has any family in Australia etc, has not, to date, been
discovered.

Any help that you can provide in finding him, and a contact address/telephone number etc would
be much appreciated, and I will pass on any details etc to his brothers.

Thank you.
 7. 'Stop Press'

Having just mentioned Philip Powditch (see previous section) I thought that you would be interested
to discover that he has recently sent me copies of pages from the family bible in his possession,
together with some photos, certificates etc, for the family archive. The extracts from the bibles, in
particular, have been really helpful, especially for the family's 'side-shoots'. Are there any more
'family bibles' out there I wonder, with interesting and useful family information?
 8. .....and finally!

If I owe you an email reply, or if I haven't telephoned you for a long while, I will do so in the near future,
and hopefully we can have a good old 'chin-wag' ! In the meantime, I do hope that you and your
family are all keeping well, and I look forward to hearing from you sometime, especially if you have
any news (either for the website or for the Powditch Archive).
I hope that you and your family are all keeping well, and I look forward to hearing from you sometime,
especially re your thoughts and comments re the above topics.

John
