I was to be the General Manager. The trip
Home was to confer with the Directors +
sign the Contract.
In October I arrived in London. The big
Metropolis appeared to me to have no end:
in whatever direction I wandered I could
get to no open country, all seemed to be
one everlasting mass of buildings.
In November 1852 I witnessed the grand
funeral procession of the burial of the
Duke of Wellington in St Paul's Cathedral
a most imposing sight.
Christmas I passed in the Highlands of
Scotland on a visit to Mrs Gray where I
became acquainted with my future wife
Marianne.
After three weeks enjoyment I came back
to London, attended some Board Meetings,
settled matters with the Directors, + then
started on a trip to France + Germany.
After spending a pleasant month on
the Continent I returned to London again -
another Board meeting or two finished my
business with the Directors + I started
North to say good bye to my friends in Scotland.
Before leaving Scotland I got engaged to
