Thomas was the 3rd child of John Kittridge Powditch and his wife,
Charlotte (nee Hirst).
Born in Valparaiso, Chile, on 24 June 1826, Thomas had what could only be described as a most interesting life.
His Mother had died on 23 September 1829, when he was just 3 years old,
and by 1839, he had been separated from his father and his brother, when
he was sent to Valparaiso (from Valdivia and Callao) to become a Junior Clerk;
he was then only 13 years old.
Five years later, on 12 January 1844, Thomas' father,
John Kittridge Powditch, died.
Left an orphan at the age of 18, Thomas' life after 1844 was principally involved
in business circles - much of it within Copper Smelting - although he did
become General Manager of several other businesses, including Gas Works,
Railways, and Silver Mines during his lifetime.
Thomas' Memoirs - on this web-site - run to just 8 pages. Unfortunately (and
most regrettably), the pages beyond page 8 had (as at 1984) been 'lost', so at
the moment I don't know when Thomas wrote his Memoirs, nor indeed do I
know whether the 'lost' pages still survive, perhaps in someone's drawer, in
a family box somewhere, or anywhere else.
Should you know of the existence of the 'lost' pages (numbered page 9
onwards), I would be most grateful if you could let me know where I might
have access to them (either in their original or photocopied form)
In the meantime, the following pages display the Memoirs of Thomas Powditch,
and throughout them, he will personally tell you all about his life, right up to
c1872, where the following pages are missing.
I do hope that you will enjoy reading Thomas' Memoirs, and, like me, be
fascinated by what he achieved during his lifetime
Thomas Powditch died on 20 July 1904, at his residence,
Poblacion Vergara, Vina del Mar.
He was aged 78 years old, and he was buried in Valparaiso
