October 2006
Third Powditch Family Gathering - (date to be advised) - Norfolk, UK
m
September will be the month (although the year has yet to be finalised) for our Third Powditch Family Gathering, (hereinafter called 3PFG) and as in 2004 and 2006, the event will be based at the 16th to 18th century Powditch village of Morston, Norfolk.
m
m
For those who came to both the first ever Powditch Family Gathering at Morston, in September 2004,
as well as to our second Gathering in September 2006, both events were most memorable occasions,
with Powditchs from as far away as Australia and Essex, New Zealand and Derby, Narberth and Cardiff,
Cumbria and the USA (and all places in between!) all meeting up in the village of Morston, Norfolk.
The majority had never met each other before, let alone spoken or had any other contact, even though
all were related through their Powditch roots - and yet, within minutes, each was chatting away as
though all had known each other for ever.
m
Included below is the Registration form for 3PFG, together with basic details of places we're
hoping to visit, what we're hoping to do - including talks, meals, walks, etc, although prices for same won't be available until about mid-2007. Also included is a ‘Terms and Conditions’ notice, which was marginally amended in the 2006 issue, mostly due to the extended period of the event.
M
Remember, your surname is not only ‘ancient’ (in its 1196 A.D. form being written as ‘Pochedygge’),
but through your ancestors who have been surnamed with variants of same, right down to today’s
‘Powditch’ spelt family members, the past 810 years (at least) of places where your ancestors’ lived,
worked and worshipped will be ‘revealed’ to those who come to their native Norfolk and take part in this
year’s Powditch Family Gathering. Come and see, and be justifiably proud of your heritage and
fascinating history, and at the same time, meet your relatives.
m
Ang and I realise that we are giving plenty of notice for the Third Powditch Family Gathering,
especially as it isn't going to take place for another 23 months, although we do hope that you will
come to the 3PFG, and we eagerly wait to not only discover who will want to join us in Morston, but
also to our renewing the friendships of all those who intend to return, and we really look forward to
hearing from you.
John & Ang

Please note that the events mentioned for both Friday and Saturday have yet to be finalised,
although the general consensus at the 2006 Powditch Family Meeting
was for there to be only one Coach trip, and for Routes to be provided to
individuals/families so that they can 'do-their-own-thing' for visiting Powditch-associated
Churches, Villages, Houses and other places, in their own cars etc
(and therefore go at their own pace)
Whether the Coach Trip will therefore be on the Friday or Saturday has yet to be resolved.

Thursday
Registration (4.15 PM to 6.40 PM at - location to be confirmed). A big welcome to Powditch family members. Issue of name-badges; provision of Information Wallets, programmes etc; Socialising in the “Powditch Room”; Coffee/tea and biscuits will be provided.
Powditch Family General Meeting (6.45pm - 7.15pm at - location to be confirmed). Providing an ideal opportunity to discuss what the family wants to do regarding future Powditch Gatherings. Update re what should happen to the Powditch website after my decease? As family members had previously decided that it would be best for Powditch research and the maintenance of the Powditch Archive to continue in its present format, this will be a chance to advise how ‘funding’ via the website and other means has succeeded (or not). Update re my intention to create a Powditch award for those family members who have made notable achievements in their lives. Present at the meeting will be Joc Wingfield who is a founder member of the Wingfield Society (an international Family History Society) who will share with us all the latter’s achievements etc.
m
Family Meal (7.45pm onwards at - location to be confirmed).. Drinks will be available from a Cash bar. The Menu is to be advised.
m
Friday
Coach Trip to Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham Hall. (10.00am - 5.00pm. Meet outside Anchor Inn at 9.55am). This tour takes us through the lovely Norfolk countryside to Wells-next-the-Sea and to its Church where several 17th to 20th century Powditch’s worshipped, were baptised, married and buried, as well as to its harbour and the Town. Here we will be met by (t.b.a.) who will take us on a guided tour of Wells, which is where several members of the Powditch family came to live (from Morston) in the late 1600s, and from where most of today’s Australian, American, Canadian, and English/Welsh/Scottish families can trace their descent. Here we will also see places where many Powditch ancestors lived and worked (including at several of the local Pubs!) as well as have time to shop in the town’s narrow and fascinating streets.

Special Guests will be invited to join us at the Service.

Fond farewells and ‘Until we meet again’. (Village Hall, Morston, 1.45pm to 2.45pm). Fond farewells and promises to see each other at the next Powditch Family Gathering.
Whilst as you are aware I have not (in previous years) charged a “Registration Fee” to cover administration costs, etc, due to my purchasing special folders etc out of my own pocket, I've decided to introduce and make a small charge for 'Registration' to the Powditch Family for administration costs etc.

I would also be most appreciative for your early intimation re the above, as well as to which of the above Events you hope to attend.
M
Although I hope to keep amounts for the chargeable events to their cost prices (with the exception of Coach travel**), when I do know the proices for the varioue events etc, I would be grateful to receive your money (£sterling; A$; NZ$; US$ etc) for those events at which you will be present, especially as I will have to book the Coaches and Venues well in advance of the weekend, and therefore will have to pay deposits ‘up front’. Should you be paying by cheque, please will you make them payable to “John C Algar” (Accounts and Receipts will be provided for all monies received and paid out, and will be available for viewing at the Powditch Family General Meeting. Besides the above, and although I don't really like to ask, as Banks make a £7 surcharge for converting non-British currency into £s, I would be grateful if you could add the current exchange rate for £7 to the total amount you intend to send. (Any ‘savings’ I am able to make in surcharges, I will repay to you during the ‘Gathering’ weekend). Thank you.
(Re Coach travel**; In view of my not knowing in advance as to how many family members will be
attending the 3PFG Gathering, I will have to base the cost per person (for Coach travel) on there being
a minimum of 15 persons attending. The Coach(es) being hired, are 32-seaters, and whilst it would be great to have all 32 seats occupied and paid for, I do have to err on the cautious side when evaluating the cost of travel per person. To provide a better understanding of the latter, the actual cost of Coach hire for
one of the tours, is £326, which - if all 32 seats were occupied and paid for - would give a cost price
for each person, of £10.19. However, at this moment, no-one has actually booked to come to the event -
even though I've had a fair bit of interest - and so I must base my figures on a minimum attendancy
figure of 15 persons, which then equates to approximately £21.73 per person (and such price will cover
the cost of the Coach hire). All I can say at the moment, is that should we have a full coach on each day,
I am fully prepared to refund the difference, or (based on your comments re same) I could donate the
difference to the Friends of Morston Church, or I would otherwise follow your instructions.

Wiveton = 2 miles; Cley-next-the-Sea = 2½ miles; Binham = 3½ miles; Holt = 6 miles;
Wells-next-the-Sea = 6 miles; Great Snoring = 10 miles)
m
If you have a computer with an internet connection, I can recommend the websites

(Best to book accommodation within say a 10 - 15 mile radius of Morston in order to get there easily
for trips etc). If you aren't able to use a computer, and/or should you require any further information re
the event, please will you either write to me at the address shown at the beginning of this form,
telephone me on 01792 234554 (or International Code +44 1792 234554), or e-mail me (using as
the Subject line; “3rd Powditch Family Gathering”), on

at Morston, but also to meeting you. Incidentally, details re the weekend,
